Editorial Illustration

This project involved illustrating an editorial entitled Global Warming: A Canary In The Mine and subsequently designing the layout for the article.  The article itself addressed how the startling rate of recession of summer sea ice in the Arctic has led to speculation of it vanishing altogether as soon as 2030.

My early concept sketching produced some cartoonish efforts such as a polar bear wearing sunglasses on a tiny desert island with a sign stuck in the sand saying North Pole.  

 

My instinct was that that the approach was unbefitting such a serious issue and I quickly moved onto sketches of a dead canary in a birdcage resembling a globe. The final illustration was hand-rendered in black and white using pantone markers before the canary yellow in an offset print style was added digitally.
